A Gift of Flowers for Men

by Amy Nutt

Many women have hesitated to send flowers to their special guy on special occasions.. According to many behavioral studies, not only do men enjoy receiving flowers as a gift, but they also show an increase in social interaction and appear to be generally happier. This also had been proven in studies done years before on women who received flowers. In fact, it is said that over 60% of men surveyed by the Society of American Florists said that they would very much like to receive flowers for Valentine’s Day. So with this part of the mystery solved, how do we know what the best flowers are to send to a man?

Because it is not yet a common practice to send flowers to men, there are no steadfast rules. However, there are a few proven preferences. For example, men seem to prefer more vibrant colored flowers as opposed to the softer shades of pink or yellow. They like reds, blues, purples and oranges. Stick to vibrant colors and steer away from pastels, unless you know them to be a favorite.

Tropical flowers are also popular with the gents. They seem to find the angular lines of exotic and tropical flowers appealing. Adding a bit of greenery may make the arrangement of flowers appear to be more masculine. If the guy receiving the gift is good with plants in general, consideration may want to be given to something that is potted as opposed to cut flowers.

You will want to consider the role this man plays in your life as well as the occasion for which you are sending the flowers. If you want to be romantic or convey that message, roses are popular. To make it more masculine, trying an unusual color may help. An example would be blue roses. Be careful when sending roses because the color does mean something and if your guy is up on such things (or has a female friend that is) you may create a disaster by sending the wrong color/message.

When it comes to the color of roses, they usually mean the following:

Red stands for romance Yellow symbolize friendship Peach are to convey sincerity or gratitude Orange means desire Pink is to symbolize happiness or a secret love /crush White stands for purity Blue means unattainable or impossible

Other than roses, there are still a host of wonderful flowers out there that can do the job. Chrysanthemums, carnations, irises, lilies are all popular with the guys and come in a host of bright colors. With all of this being said, if you are still nervous about how your guy will react to getting flowers it can be toned down by adding something to the mix such as incorporating one of his hobbies into the bouquet. For example, if your guy likes fish, arrange a single flower or small bunch of flowers fastened to a new fishing rod with a bow. Try to be creative because after all, there are no rules here other than he has to be pleased with his gift.

It is also suggested that if you are unsure of what to send, you can contact a reputable florist who will have a good grasp on not only what flowers to use in the bouquet, but also how to dress them up. They will know how to help you send the perfect bouquet to the man in your life. Be brave because after all, men love to receive gift just like the girls do and for the same reasons. Most importantly, sending flowers shows that you are thinking about them!

Building A Garden Even When Living In The City

by Chris Channing

The urban environment is rewarding in the sense that you have everything you need to carry on a great quality of life. The only trouble is that you could lose touch of your “green” side. Even when you have little space to work with because of an apartment lifestyle, you have options to take on.

Apartments are hard to get light into, even with windows. During winter it’s not possible to keep plants out in the sun on the window sill due to extreme weather. Luckily we can recreate the effect the Sun has on our plants by using approved lighting sources. Try to allot a certain part of your apartment, or even an entire room, to your small garden. That way the light won’t interfere with your normal routine.

Getting a community garden added to your apartment complex is easy enough, so long as the complex has some free space in which to do it in. Apartment managers are more than happy to let residents take care of the finer aspects of outside beauty, since they won’t have to pay a company to do so. The complex gets a healthy upgrade, and the apartment owner gains a hobby.

Food gardens are hard to duplicate in closed spaces. Trees and bushes are hard to get into an apartment, and if they can be, then as they grow they will become a nuisance. Instead focus on smaller vegetables and fruits. The cabbage plant is a good plant for such an application, since it takes up little space and offers great salads.

Don’t worry about fertilizer if you are short on cash. You can get a chicken if you have a small backyard to provide it. While you would think such a thing would be messy, it actually is an easy process. Some states ban the ownership of a rooster in urban areas, but hens should be just fine. Check with your local laws to see what you can do.

Decoration among the house is possible even with plants that seem to have too long of a span to include. Plants with vines are great for the home, since they can be expertly crafted to grow along certain routes. In time the room can have a vine border or an aesthetic lining around a common area. That way you can have constant contact with the plants you grow.

Final Thoughts

Apartments are cheap and work well for what you need when in the city. You don’t need your own real estate to get started with a garden, though. Look out for more tips on gardening in an urban environment by visiting home and garden shops near you.

Flowers in Florida - Flower Beds 101

by JT Thompsen

Growing flowers is different in Central Florida, because of the climate. Florida only has three seasons. Winter weather consists of cool nights and an occasional freeze. Spring has some cool nights without any freezing. High night temperatures and high humidity along with heavy rains characterize much of the summer and early fall.

Flowers that are adapted to grow for multiple years are called perennials. Perennials usually bloom only for part of the year. Those flowers not considered perennials are called annuals or bedding plants. Annuals are typically replaced at the beginning of each season with varieties adapted to that season. This practice ensures the flower beds are in nearly continuous bloom throughout the year.

Flower gardening in Central Florida is very much a good news/bad news proposition. The good news is that Florida has lots of sunshine and mild winters. The bad news is that pest abound as do sandy soils and heavy summer rains. The result is that flower beds, especially bedding plants, require extra maintenance such as scouting for and spot treatment of pests.

Planting successful flower beds in Central Florida requires matching the right bedding plants to the right season. Those flowers that prefer cooler night time temperatures, such as pansies, petunias and snapdragons will be most successful when planted in the fall, winter and early spring. Those flowers that thrive in warmer conditions and higher humidity like marigold, gazania, amaranthus, celosia, crossandra, impatiens, vinca and coleus are best planted from late spring to early summer. Wax begonias and salvias do well year-round in Central Florida

Planning the use of flowers in the landscape is important. Bedding plants should be used only as an accent, not as a central feature. The use of annuals should harmonize with the rest of the landscape, the home and other flower beds. Use of too many different colors or kinds of flowers will diminish the appearance. Flower beds consisting of only one type of flower are common.

Before the plants are purchased, prepare the beds by adding several inches of organic matter such as peat or compost. Then turn the soil to a depth of at least 6 inches. If possible, plant the flowers immediately after purchase. Holding flowers in their containers increases the chance of problems. Annual beds can be fertilized after planting and then on a monthly schedule.

Be sure to purchase good quality flowers. Look for dark green leaves and plants that are disease free and insect free. Plants do not have to be blooming at the time of purchase. Flowers that have been poorly cared for and reduced in price are not bargains. They will not fully recover and cannot match the performance of healthy plants.

Flowers can usually be purchased either in flats, also called cell packs, or in 4-inch pots. The advantage of cell packs is that they are cheaper. 4-inch pots are more expensive, but they have several advantages. Their larger size means they will bloom quicker, cover the bed quicker, and produce flowers for more of the growing season.

Send The Right Tidings With Flowers For Specific Occasions

by Chris Channing

When you send a flower to someone, you are sending much more than just a stem and a pretty bloom. You are sending a general message as well! Flowers are associated with different types of feelings, emotions, and though processes. Knowing the meanings can help you pick the right flower for every occasion.

There are plenty of flowers to choose from- that much is certain. It is accepted, then, that some flowers will share meanings with other flowers or have dual meanings. The Lilac and the Freesia is a good example, as both are put into themes of innocence. Innocence is a theme used primarily in weddings, but can also make their way into youth occasions such as a birthday party.

It’s sad: friendship isn’t rewarded nearly enough among friends today. If you want to thank a friend for being there through the thick and the thin, you should go for a yellow-based flower much like the sunflower. You won’t have to gift a flower for no reason at all, but instead pay attention to the smaller things friends do for you. The next time your friend is feeling blue or in the hospital- you’ll know what to do!

Orange flowers such as the Birds of Paradise are quite versatile. Since a flower like the Birds of Paradise indicates joy, you could theoretically use the flower in the majority of all gift-giving applications. They would do well in bright weddings, to help cheer up a significant other, to celebrate something truly worthy of flowers, or any number of other reasons. When you are confused on flower types, you can seldom go wrong with such flowers.

Most are aware of the message that a red rose will send- love. Perhaps the most popular flower when it comes to Valentine’s day, roses are a classic symbol in society. Don’t neglect other flowers, however! The Snapdragon is an example of how you can be more specific than just showing love, since they are more affiliated with the feeling of desire. Know when to use each of the love-based emotions to send the right flower.

If you want to show someone respect, or display a good sense of character, light purple flowers such as an Iris or Anemone can signify such subjects. If you want to make an inspiring scene for a funeral, want to wish someone well, or just want to thank someone for something they have done such flowers will be excellent in choosing.

In Conclusion

When you are shopping for a flower the next time you have need to gift it to someone, remember what you have learned. Also seek help with the retailer to see what he or she would recommend that you buy for a specific occasion. The retailer, after all, is one of the most credible sources to go to for information.

Gardening Advice

by Pete Jackwright

Everyone who owns a home wants a garden where your kids can have fun and you too can relax on a holiday. This is because a garden allows us to be close to nature. A home garden is incomplete without potted plants and flowering plants. Before you choose the plants to grow in your home garden, take a tour of your neighborhood and check out what types of plants are being planted. That’ll give you an idea of what grows in your area.

Flowering houseplants, like Clivia or Kaffir Lily add vibrancy and a touch of the exotic. The most popular exotic house plant and garden favorite, Sambac, brings the most wonderful aroma into your home garden. If you want a plant that requires minimal care, the cactus is your best bet. It can grow in any weather and is easy to care for.

Start Your Own Perennial Garden With Seeds

by Cindy Johnson

A lot of avid gardeners like to save money by growing their own perennials from seeds. This may sound difficult but the hardest part of taking on such a project is just getting started and knowing how to plan ahead. It may take a bit of extra time to grow all your plants and flowers from seeds but in the long run you’ll have a great feeling of satisfaction in addition to a beautiful garden.

Obviously, the first thing you need to do is choose what type of plants you want to grow and purchase seeds. You’ll want to research the different types of seeds available because depending on the type of plant they will have different growing requirements. For example, in order to germinate, some seeds will need to be exposed to freezing temperatures.

Plants that are most often started outside in the fall will require this type of cold treatment. Some examples include Bleeding heart, Delphinium, and Phlox. If your seeds require cold treatment you can set them outside in flats for 30-45 days. You’ll want to check the seed packaging for required temperatures as this will vary from species to species. After the cold treatment the seeds should be put under indoor lights.

It’s also important that you purchase seeds from credible suppliers if you’re interested in growing a particular cultivar. If you collect seeds that have fallen off other mature plants you most likely will not get good results. According to gardening experts, these open-pollinated seeds will not “come true.” This means the offspring will not look like the parents.

Once you purchase your seeds you should look for 20-row, seed-starting inserts. These inserts are sold to fit 10 inch by 20 inch flats. You’ll also want to acquire the appropriate type of soil mix for your seeds. Because each type of plant is different you’ll want to study up on the germination requirements of different plants. An excellence reference is Steve Still’s Manual of Herbaceous Ornamental Plants.

In order to place your seeds under lights you might want to purchase an inexpensive portable greenhouse. These little greenhouses can be a great way to save space in your home and start perennial seeds indoors for planting later in the spring or fall. There are many different sizes, shapes, and styles to choose from and you can save a lot of money by shopping for your portable greenhouse online.

Bamboo Strong Vigorous Grower

by Thomas Fryd

If you’re looking for an interesting houseplant, try bamboo. Though it can be challenging, it is attractive and strong and spreads prolifically.

The first step in growing bamboo is preparing the pot. While there are some smaller species, most bamboo plants grow extremely high. You won’t see much growth in the first few years, however, so a medium-sized pot should do.

Once you have selected your pot, it’s time to get the soil ready. Bamboo thrives in well-drained, acidic soil, so choose a loam soil low in clay content. A soil testing kit will allow you to test the pH. You can also improve the soil by spreading a couple of inches of mulch on the surface and adding earthworms to the pot to decay the leaves and increase soil aeration.

When the plants mature and begin to shed leaves, allow them to remain on the soil to increase moisture. Another good surface soil treatment is groundcover. Choose one that is high in nitrogen and silica, both of which bamboo requires to thrive. Some gardeners add nutrients to the soil with chicken manure, though many don’t like the odor, especially if the plant is kept in or very near the house.

Bamboo may be planted year-round in fairly warm climates, but gardeners in colder climates should wait until mid-spring. If you plant later than this, the bamboo won’t have enough time to become established before cold weather returns. Be aware, too, that if you keep your bamboo inside near a window, heat can be drawn away from the plant by the cold window, though heavy mulching will offset this effect somewhat.

Because bamboo spreads quickly, it is important to make sure it doesn’t become root-bound. Even if you use a large pot, you will likely have to re-pot at some point. Some opt for smaller species to keep the plants from outgrowing their containers too quickly, or will use a long planter box to create a neat row of plants.

Watering carefully is crucial for bamboo grown in containers. Proper watering practice is critical for container-grown bamboo and palms like the Rhapis excelsa palm. Because bamboo evolved in very moist climates, it cannot tolerate much dryness. Be sure not to soak the soil, either, though. Experiment and observe until you have found the watering schedule your plant responds best to.

Be aware, too, that new bamboo plantings must be watered more frequently. Though twice weekly waterings are the norm, some plants only need one watering each week. About one half gallon of water is needed for a five-gallon pot. Watering more often than this may damage the plant, causing it to drop too many leaves. Don’t worry if the leaves yellow and fall in the Spring, though; this is normal.
